The iPhone 5C was announced today during the Apple event which was supposed to be a “budget phone”. The phones comes in several colour schemes and has pretty decent specifications. However, when a phone is labeled a budget phone, you would expect it to cost at least below Rs. 30,000. That isn’t the case with the iPhone 5c.
The iPhone 5C would set you back a whopping $549 for the 16gb model which would set it approximately around Rs. 56,000 (not taking into account the price to import it) and $649 for the 64gb model costing around 66,000 in Pakistani rupees.
This is a huge disappointment for the people who were looking to buy the phone thinking that it would be cheaper than the high end phones out in the market. The perception that everyone had was that it would be the iPhone which the masses could afford and would be seen in most peoples hands once it was released but what we are seeing now is a completely different feature. I for one am extremely disappointed.
Seeing that Apple had replaced the glass back and aluminum back used in previous versions of the iPhone with plastic, something which the Galaxy line of phones were highly criticized for having, rumors were also going around that the $200 price tag was for the unlocked version but sadly, it turns out that it is merely for the 2-year contract version.
It is hard to see the phone not selling since it is made by Apple but the price tag is close to the one of iPhone 5S and people would prefer buying that if they are planning to spend that much money. With the likes of HTC One, Galaxy S4, Motorola Moto X, LG G2 and Note 3 (close to being available) I would expect people to choose these phones over the iPhone 5C.
Also, what comes as a surprise is that the iPhone 5 has been discontinued while the iPhone 4S is still available.
