Apple: iWork, iPhoto and iMovie will be free… IF you meet the criteria

During Apple’s annual event, it was announced that several of the company’s premium applications will be available for free to some customers. These premium mobile applications include Pages, Numbers and Keynote which are collectively the office suite applications more commonly known as iWork and the media editing applications, iMovie and iPhoto.

These applications on the App Store are available for different prices adding up to $39.95 around Rs. 4000. It would be great to get these applications for free if you have use for them.

The criteria which needs to be met before being eligible to download the applications for free includes the following:

1. The iOS device which you are using, iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad has to be activated on or after the 1st of September
2. The device which you are using has to be compatible with iOS 7, which was kind of obvious from the start. The list of devices which will receive the update are:
  • iPhone 5S
  • iPhone 5C
  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 4S, but does not support:
    • Filters in Camera app
    • AirDrop
  • iPhone 4, but does not support:
    • All items from iPhone 4S, plus
    • Panoramic photos
    • Siri
iPad
  • Fourth Generation iPad
  • Third Generation iPad, but does not support:
    • Filters in Camera app
    • Panoramic photos
    • AirDrop
  • iPad 2, but does not support:
    • All items from 3rd Gen. iPad, plus
    • Filters in Photos app
    • Square photos and videos
    • Siri
  • iPad mini
iPod touch
  • Fifth Generation iPod Touch
3. iOS 7 needs to be installed on your device first before the applications become free, they will have the price tag on them till you upgrade

This means that older devices which are compatible with iOS 7 will also be eligible to download the applications like the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S as long as they are activated on or after the 1st of this month and iOS 7 is installed on them. Although it is great that Apple is making some of its premium application free for some of its customers, it should be noted that these should not be download just because they are free. You should download them if you have the need because they take up a lot of space and will take at least 8gb of your memory if not more.

If you really want to use Office applications then other options should also be kept in mind like Polaris Office, an Office app which comes preinstalled on some of the newer Android devices and also works great and gets the job done. But, it costs $12.99 which is around Rs. 1,300 which is still cheaper if you are not eligible to download the premium applications for free.

There are also some great free photo editing applications among which Picsart is my personal favourite. It has a large number of editing features and if you haven’t already downloaded it, do take a look at it, you won’t be disappointed.

Some great video editing applications are also present in the App Store but I haven’t actually used them to their full extent.

(Note: for those of you who don’t know, activation of an iOS device is when you open it for the first time after buying it and put in your Apple ID)
